Dark Shadows: New Images Released

Movie theaterLegendary director Tim Burton’s next project is Dark Shadows starring Michelle Pfeiffer and Johnny Depp, and new stills from the project have been released online, ahead of the movie’s May 2012 release, with both of its stars looking more than a little macabre.

The picture tells the tale of an ancient vampire, played by Depp, who tries to reconnect with his descendants, having spent the two centuries before in a tomb.

Pfeiffer takes the part of one of these relatives, and, as you would expect, and as at least one of the images reveals, the reunion is not a happy, smooth-running affair.

Burton, who is the partner of English actor Helena Bonham-Carter, has a reputation for dark and quirky-themed movies, from Edward Scissorhands to Sleepy Hollow and Sweeney Todd. This latest venture is no exception, and seems to have all of Burton’s trademark weirdness.

“It’s got such a strange vibe,” he explained in an interview. “All the cast got into the weird spirit of what Dark Shadows was. It has a sense of heightened melodrama: we just had to feel our way through it to find the tone.”

Burton is also reportedly toying with the idea of returning to another Gothic classic with the production of another Beetlejuice movie.

He enthused, “I love that character and Michael Keaton is so great in it.”

Apparently, Burton has told Seth Grahame-Smith to show him any new ideas he may have for a new Beetlejuice project, and the screenwriter seemed delighted at the prospect of being involved.

The Lone Ranger Rides Again

Lone RangerThe Lone Ranger has slashed costs enough for Disney to give the movie the green light, it has been announced. The corporation has now revealed that the western is back on track, with a new release date: May 31 2013.

Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer (The Social Network) were due to star as Tonto and the Ranger respectively. Then the budget escalated to more than $250m, as Cowboys & Aliens, from Universal/DreamWorks, did less than brilliantly at the box office, and studio bosses got the jitters just a couple of months before shooting was due to start. Back in August, the picture even faced the prospect of being completely axed.

Since then, however, producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Gore Verbinski who did the first three Pirates of the Caribbean movies) have had talks with the studio to lower estimated costs to a more realistic $215m, and keep the project on the rails.

The script, which initially gave the western a number of supernatural aspects, was altered to cut the costs of visual effects, while the stars also reportedly took upfront salary hits, which are likely to be paid back should the film do well.

It’s not known, however, how many digital werewolves, Indian ghosts, or epic train crashes have been sacrificed to get the film of the classic kids’ TV show into production, but we don’t care.

We’re just glad those cries of “Hi, ho, Silver!” will be heard again, and so is Depp, a childhood fan of The Long Ranger, who told MTV it was just a case of waiting patiently until the issues were fixed.
