New Year’s Movies To Watch Out For!
When the holidays are over, and affordable, indoor entertainment is called for, watch out for these winter warmer movies, coming your way next month.
If horror is your thing, in the first week of January, The Devil Inside, in theaters from January 6, tells the tales of a woman inItaly who becomes involved in a string of unauthorized exorcisms, as she attempts to find out what happened to her mom, alleged to have killed three people during her own exorcism.
More of a drama fan? The Roadie, which has a limited release on the same day, is the story of musician Jimmy Testagros, who returns to his hometown after two decades on the road with Blue Oyster Cult to care for his sick mother. Things get complicated when he falls in love with an old friend, now married to his long-time nemesis.
There’s another thriller in store with Beneath the Darkness, starring Dennis Quaid, in which a group of teenagers works to expose a local man as the vicious killer of their best friend, and avoid becoming his next victims.
Action drama Contraband, starring Kate Beckinsale and Mark Wahlberg, opens the following week. It takes a look at the underground, cutthroat world of global smuggling, and is a story of desperate criminals, corrupt officials, big payoffs and high stakes.
For something a little lighter, Joyful Noise also has a January 13 release, and is a musical comedy starring Queen Latifah and Dolly Parton as two choir members with different views on how to grab the top prize in a nationwide choir competition.
With Beauty and the Beast, a 3-D re-release of the Disney classic, and Meryl Streep’s much hyped The Iron Lady also to look forward to, January looks set to be a great month for movie lovers!

Irreverent Christmas Movies
Don’t like all the warm fuzziness of Christmas? These films bring new meaning to the term “naughty or nice.”
Bad Santa (2003)—Willie T. Stokes (Billy Bob Thornton) plays Santa every year at the mall, and dwarf friend Marcus (Tony Cox) is always his elf. Each year the duo steal from the mall after hours and have yet to be caught. This all changes when Willie befriends a lonely boy he calls The Kid (Brett Kelly) and attempts to give him fatherly advice and guidance. Lauren Graham plays his bartender love interest Sue, and Bernie Mac is the corrupt Security Chief who wants in on the next heist.
Black Christmas (2006)—In this remake of the 1974 film of the same name, Billy (Robert Mann) and his daughter Agnes (Dean Friss) snap because of their horrific upbringings and begin a killing spree on Christmas Eve. After killing a man in a Santa suit, Billy dons the costume, and Agnes begins murdering sorority sisters who—to outsiders—mysteriously go missing. This film also stars Michelle Trachtenberg in a minor role.
Santa’s Slay (2005)—Santa (Bill Goldberg) is not who everyone thought it was. It turns out he was the product of an immaculate birth from Satan and has been forced to hand out presents for the past 100 years. Only now, the 100 years are up and he is free to continue his killing spree. Santa kills everyone in his path in a plethora of horrific ways until the holiday ends and he returns to the North Pole until next year.

Mel Brooks Orders Up “Pizzaman”
Filming is due to start soon in Illinois on the next offering from horror fan and comedy legend Mel Brooksa slasher flick by the name of Pizzaman.
A director and a screen play are already in place for the project. The script was actually written by Brooks’ long-time collaborators Rudy De Luca and Steve Haberman—who will also direct—some years ago.
The pair have previously worked together on Dracula: Dead and Loving It and Life Stinks, in which the 83-year-old Brooks also starred.
The plot centers on a young man who has been locked up in a psychiatric institution for something he did not do, and is driven crazy as a result. On his release, he figures that he will get murderously even with society and those who incarcerated him. He takes a pizza delivery job to carry out the killings.
It’s also been reported that Cary Elwes (Robin Hood: Men in Tights) is set to play a detective in the movie, while Stacy Keach is also in the frame to take on the part of the main character.
Brooks says: “When they first told me the plot, I thought they were kidding! But it’s an exciting, interesting script, and I’ve already worked with them on it a little bit. It’s purely original, based on their insane imagination.
“Steve Haberman is a very good screenwriter, and a natural director who understands everything there is to know about directing a horror movie. He’s now scouting locations in Illinois.”

The Grudge: The Next Chapter?
It’s the franchise that refuses to die or go away …Horror fans will rejoice in the news that a new picture in the Grudge franchise is in the pipeline. Ghost House Pictures have announced that, together with Mandate, it is remaking the original The Grudge film, a movie which was itself a remake of the Japanese spine tingler Ju-On. This was originally released in 2000 as two low-budget, straight-to-video Japanese movies.
Their success urged director Takashi Shimizu to make a version for theaters based on the videos, called Ju-on: The Grudge. That in itself led to a sequel, Ju-On: The Grudge 2, and then The Grudge, the US remake, containing elements of scenes from all the Ju-On pictures. (Confused? You should be!)
Although The Grudge (2004) and The Grudge 2 (2006) were both released in theaters, the third picture in the franchise went straight to video, which may have led some to believe that the series was not long for this world, at least as far as mainstream movies were concerned.
It’s not yet known whether The Grudge 4 will receive a full launch in theaters.
In the first picture, care worker Sarah Michelle Gellar was haunted by a string of ghostly babies. That scenario will probably supply the bones of the plot this time around.
The Grudge isn’t the only horror franchise in which studios have placed their faith. Final Destination 5 is currently on release, while the green light has recently been awarded to Scary Movie 5.
The latest offering will mean a total of eight films in the franchise. Another plan to produce Grudge 4 was ditched in 2009.
