Child Actresses We’d Like To See Again

young girl holding a movie clapper isolated on whiteAs the decades come and go, some actresses stand out as transcending time and place. These two girls—now women—have moved on from their incredibly small dabble in film, but they still retain a place in the hearts of Hollywood.

1. Hillary Wolf

Remember the 1992 film Big Girls Don’t Cry… They Get Even? Hillary Wolf played the protagonist Laura Chartoff in this comedy about a girl who runs away from her dysfunctional family. Wolf is also known for her role in Home Alone (1990) and Home Alone 2: Lost in New York (1992), as sister to Kevin McAllister (Macaulay Culkin). Though she was an excellent actor, Wolf went on to pursue her truer passion—that of professional judo. She began practicing the sport at age seven and went on to represent the U.S. team in the 1996 Olympics.

2. Cecilia Rivera

Aside from one appearance in the Spanish TV series El Comisario in 2008, Rivera’s only other role was as Florés de Aguirre in Aguirre: The Wrath of God (1972). Despite her short-lived acting career, and a role which gave her few speaking lines, Rivera’s performance in Aguirre is unforgettable, as is the movie itself. Aguirre is said to have influenced Frances Ford Coppola’s 1979 film Apocalypse Now, and both have earned a cult following. In Aguirre, Florés played the title character’s daughter, and worked under harsh conditions, in a rather dangerous area, alongside the lead, Klaus Kinski, who was known as a brilliant but volatile actor. Anyone who can hold her own against these odds deserves the highest praise.

Hollywood Actresses Take On Cinderella

Glass slipperHollywood has a fascination with Cinderella stories, and viewers can’t seem to get enough. While we all know the traditional Cinderella tale, five others tales of rags to riches love have graced the big screen in the past two decades. Some are obvious replicas, and others may surprise you.

1. Ever After (1998)

Drew Barrymore plays Danielle, a 16th century French heroine whom the film calls the original Cinderella. But unlike the traditional fairy tale, Leonardo DaVinci is her “fairy godmother,” the servants are her “attendants,” and the gown she wears is that of her deceased mother. When the prince comes to place the glass slipper back on her foot she has already rescued herself from an evil master, thus enacting a more feminist ending.

2. Maid in Manhattan

Marisa Ventura (Jennifer Lopez) is a hotel maid who runs into senatorial candidate Christopher (Ralph Fiennes) while trying on a socialite guest’s white suit. Her “ball” is a benefit dinner and her attendants are her coworkers who dance around jovially just like little mice. The “wicked stepsisters” are instead the socialite herself and her clueless sidekick.

3. A Cinderella Story (2004)

High school age Samantha (Hillary Duff) is left to slave away in her widowed father’s diner after his own death. While a wicked stepmother and stepsisters nagging her at every turn, she falls for the school’s quarterback through online chatting. The rest is a pure fairytale ending, only with a dropped cellphone at a masquerade ball instead of a glass slipper.

4. The Prince and Me (2004)

The love story is reversed with Julia Stiles as the working-class Paige and Edward (Luke Mably) as a prince hiding his royal blood.  However, the basic theme is the same, with the prince devoting himself to the commoner and becoming a better man as a result.

5. Enchanted (2007)

Worlds collide when Giselle (Amy Adams), fiance to Prince Edward, is cast from Disney-like Andalusia to present-day Manhattan by the prince’s disapproving mother. She then falls for divorced lawyer Robert (Patrick Dempsey), and her Cinderella shoe is passed down to a New York woman who falls for the Prince and sojourns to Andalusia.
