Harry Potter Bows Out With Box Office Smash And Rapturous Reception
After nearly 10 years of magical adventures, the boy wizard is finally bowing out with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II. But Harry is clearly determined to go out with a bang!
The movie grossed $32m in advance ticket sales across North Americaahead of its July 15 opening, breaking records even before its first pubic screening. And its midnight opening was the biggest of all time, taking an incredible $43.5m. This was getting on for double Part 1’s $24m revenue and smashed The Twilight Saga: Eclipse’s $30m record. InIMAX alone it also broke a record, garnering $2m.
The midnightscreening played in 4,375 USmovie theaters, 3,000 3D theaters and 274 IMAX venues, the biggest ever release for an IMAX, 3D or Potter picture.
Opening night came four days after the US premiere in New York City on July 11, and eight days after the July 7 world premiere in London’s Trafalgar Square, at which Harry Potter author JK Rowling and star Emma Watson, who plays Harry’s friend Hermione, wept as the franchise was coming to an end.
And the reception from critics has already been rapturous. Deathly Hallows received 91/100 from professional critics at the Broadcast Films Critics Association, the largest organization of its kind in the US and Canada, their best-ever rating for a Harry Potter movie. The website Metacritic awarded the film ‘Universal Acclaim’ status with a score of 87 out of 100. Another influential site, Rotten Tomatoes, gave an overall approval rating of 97%, based on 187 reviews, all from the site’s top critics.
In fact, it’s been hard to find a bad word written about this movie. A happy ending indeed.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II
After a decade on screen, there’s time for just one final outing for Harry and his friends at Hogwarts as Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II ends the series of eight movies when it opens in theaters in the USA July 15.
Tantalising trailers have already kept fans guessing as to the final outcome since the spring. There are scenes showing Hermione throwing her arms around Harry in tears, Hogwarts surrounded by flames and Harry pulling Voldemort off a ledge, but no further clues.
Based on the JK Rowling novel of the same name, the story continues Harry’s quest to find and destroy Lord Voldemort’s last remaining Horcruxes in a bid to annihilate him. Meanwhile, Voldemort has in his possession the as yet unbeaten Elder Wand, and is on his way to completing the final stage to Ultimate Power. His attack on Hogwarts is an attempt to join Harry in the last battle against the forces of darkness which could take over the wizarding and ‘muggle’ worlds.
Directed by David Yates, the movie stars Daniel Radcliffe as Harry Potter, and reunites him with Emma Watson and Rupert Grint as Harry’s best friends Hermione and Ron Weasley. Among the supporting cast are British actors Helena Bonham Carter, Maggie Smith, Ralph Fiennes and Alan Rickman.
The epic final scene is set nearly 20 years after the picture’s main story, but a combination of make-up and special effects have been used, rather than casting older actors to take on the roles of the main characters.
Released eight months after Part 1, unlike that movie, it is also being shown in 2D, 3D and IMAX formats.
David Yates has described the movie as “operatic, colorful and fantasy-oriented“, a “big opera with huge battles.” So while the ending may not have been revealed, one thing is clear: Potter fans are in for an epic final treat.
