Gervais to Step Down as Golden Globes Host
British comic Ricky Gervais has said he will not be back to host next year’s Golden Globe awards, after spending three years ruffling more than a few Hollywood feathers and making jibes about some of its biggest stars.
The number of viewers of this year’s recent ceremony is down slightly compared to the number for 2010, with many viewers noting that the comedian seemed to have toned down his jokes from previous years.
Now he has posted on his website: “I’ve told my agent never to let me be persuaded to do it again.”
But, at this year’s ceremony he still managed to slip in a few near-the-knuckle gags about the British actor Colin Firth, star of The King’s Speech. He also introduced Robert Downey Jr. by saying his most well-known roles were at the LA county jail and the Betty Ford clinic, and poked fun at the movie I Love You, Philip Morris.
Last year, many felt Gervais would not be allowed back to the awards, with some critics saying they reckoned he had “crossed lines of taste and civility.”
But organizers heralded the ceremony with an ad campaign hinting that the funnyman would go further than before with his humor at the 2012 gig.
However, reviewers described his performance as “subdued” and “a let-down.”
Still, the show was the most-watched in the US on the night it took place, with 16.8 million viewers, a slight decrease from the 17 million who tuned in in 2011.
Gervais told David Letterman that he would definitely be stepping down but said the 2012 event had been his favorite to date.
At the ceremony, The Artist and The Descendants took the best motion picture awards, and Jean Dujardin and George Clooney, stars of each one respectively, the best actor awards. Meryl Streep won best actress in a drama for The Iron Lady, and best director went to Martin Scorsese for Hugo.

It’s George Vs. George In Golden Globes 2012 Nods!
George Clooney faces some stiff competition in the Golden Globes 2012 shortlistfrom himself! Two of his pictures, The Ides of March and The Descendants, will go head to head in four major categories including best screenplay and best picture in next year’s awards.
The star has been given the nod in the best director category for Ides, while Alexander Payne, who directed The Descendants, is also up for the same honor. In the best actor nominations, Clooney has been shortlisted for The Descendants, while Ryan Gosling, whom gorgeous George cast as the lead in The Ides of March, is up for the same award.
However, the real leader of the pack is neither of the above, but French silent movie The Artist, which has six mentions, including nods for best comedy or musical, best comedy or musical actor and best musical score.
Given that the Globes have traditionally been a litmus test for the Oscars, The Artist also looks poised to bag a raft of Academy Award nominations.
More traditional Hollywoodfare has also been honored, with civil rights drama The Help collecting five nods for awards. Hugo has received two, while Spielberg’s War Horse received just one. Harry Potter’s final outing, The Deathly Hallows, came away from the nominations empty-handed.
Jodie Foster and Kate Winslet go head to head in the best actress in the musical or comedy section for Polanski’s Carnage.
British cinema received nominations for Tilda Swinton in We Need to Talk About Kevin (best actress in a drama), Michael Fassbender in Shame, and Kenneth Branagh for best supporting actor and Janet McTeer for best supporting actress. Animated movie Arthur Christmas also received a mention.
The awards ceremony takes place on January 15, with Brit funnyman Ricky Gervais hosting the ceremony.

Ricky Gervais To Host Golden Globes
British comedian Ricky Gervais is to host the 2012 Golden Globes, the third time he has presented the prestigious film and TV awards ceremony. And he has promised more of the style of humor which has previously sparked controversy and put some of Hollywood’s most important noses out of joint.
His stint as spell at this year’s event was peppered with jokes at the expense of the gathered screen stars and even the organizers, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA).
The string of jibes caused many to wonder whether the 50-year-old comic and creator of The Office and Extras would be asked to perform the role again.
Now Gervais has posted a YouTube video on his Twitter account showing his performance from this year’s awards, promising “This X 10.”
The decision was taken after talks with NBC, broadcaster of the ceremony. In a statement, the HFPA said: “After weeks of rumor it’s finally official, Ricky Gervais will be back to host the Golden Globes for a third year.”
The statement acknowledged that maybe not everyone would be happy with the announcement, and added that, following the furor of the last show, Gervais had at first said he didn’t want to return as presenter. But he “gradually warmed to the idea and met with HFPA president Aida Takla-O’Reilly in Paris to discuss it.”
Close-to-the-knuckle gags last year included swipes at Charlie Sheen’s drinking, and digs at Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp. At this January’s ceremony, Gervais joked that the HFPA took bribes, and swiped at stars including Mel Gibson, Bruce Willis and Robert Downey Jr.
Fasten your seatbelts for a white-knuckle ride this time round …
