Young Italian-American Actors
These stars show that Italian-Americans have more to offer than just Jersey Shore and The Real Housewives of New Jersey.
1. Sophia Bush
Born in 1982, Sophia Bush is best known for her role as Brooke Davis on the WB’s One Tree Hill. Some of her movie credits include a lead role in the thriller The Hitcher (2007), a vegan activist in the romantic teen comedy John Tucker Must Die (2006), and a preppy, type-A, sex-crazed roommate in Table For Three (2009). Now that One Tree Hill has come to a close, we’re bound to see this actress of Italian descent in other films.
2. Vanessa Marano
Marano won the hearts of Gilmore Girls fans as Luke Danes’ (Scott Patterson) estranged daughter—a feat hard to do as her character inadvertently caused the breakup of the two main characters. Marano’s character was also the cousin of Luke’s nephew Jess Mariano (Milo Ventimiglia). One of her earlier roles was as the daughter of Jack Malone (Anthony LaPaglia) on the crime show Without a Trace. Marano’s credits are mostly in television as opposed to film, and she currently has a leading role in the family drama Switched at Birth.
3. Stephen Colletti
Half Italian and half American, Stephen Colletti’s breakthrough role was in the reality show Laguna Beach, where he dated Kristin Cavallari, who is also of Italian descent. Since then, he has pursued acting full time with a guest spot and then returning regular on One Tree Hill. Colletti has also appeared in two horror films, Kill Katie Malone (2010) and Mask Maker (2010), and in the family movie Shannon’s Rainbow (2009).
4. Milo Ventimiglia
Milo Ventimiglia is of Sicilian-Italian descent on his father’s side. Also a regular on Gilmore Girls, he played Luke Danes’ troubled nephew Jess Mariano, who won the affections of the main character Rory Gilmore (Alexis Bledel). He was a main character in the television shows Heroes and The Bedford Diaries, and had a recurring role in the show American Dreams. Ventimiglia’s latest movie is The Divide (2011) which came out this year.

Getting To Know… Emily Blunt
Emily Blunt was the envy of many when she got engaged to—and then married—John Krasinski from The Office. Blunt met Krasinski through Anne Hathaway, who Blunt worked with on the set of The Devil Wears Prada (2006). Blunt is still perhaps best known for this role, where she portrays the snooty and arrogant assistant of fashion magazine editor Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep). Blunt’s natural striking beauty matched with her sophisticated English accent gave the character a sense of effortless elegance that she has since brought to her other roles.
Originally from London, Blunt started acting as a young teen in order to combat her persistent stutter. After The Devil Wears Prada, she starred in such films as The Jane Austen Book Club (2007), Dan in Real Life (2007), Charlie Wilson’s War (2007), and Sunshine Cleaning (2008). Now firmly established as a talented and varied actress, she played Queen Victoria in The Young Victoria (2009) and Matt Damon’s love interest Elise Sellas in The Adjustment Bureau (2011), which grossed at $10 million and $62 million respectively.
With The Office now starting its 8th season, Emily just may surpass her husband in celebrity buzz and notoriety, or at least give John a run for his money. No doubt he is proud of his new wife—as proud as John’s character Jim Halpert was when his wife Pam Beesly (Jenna Fischer) moved up from secretary to sales rep. See Emily next in The Muppets (2011) alongside Amy Adams and Jason Segel.

Getting To Know… Amanda Seyfried
Amanda Seyfried is the quintessential beautiful, blonde actress who was trained in classical opera and started modeling at age 11. Her first arrival on the big screen was in Tina Fey’s Mean Girls (2004), in which she played the role of ditzy Karen Smith—a high schooler whose breasts can predict the weather. She lost the larger role of Regina George to Rachel McAdams, but won the lead in Mama Mia! (2008) over this very same costar.
Mama Mia! propelled Seyfried further into the spotlight as she played alongside such well-established actors as Colin Firth, Pierce Brosnan, and Meryl Streep. She was also able to showcase her fine vocal skills in this much beloved movie musical. While filming Mama Mia!, she continued her role as polygamist Bill Henrickson’s somber daughter in the HBO drama Big Love, playing a character much different than either Mean Girls’ Karen or Mama Mia!’s Sophie.
After thus establishing herself as a serious actor, she joined the “Nicholas Sparks family,” as Savannah Curtis in the movie Dear John (2010) based on Spark’s novel of the same name. Other Nicholas Sparks female leads include Mean Girls’ Rachel McAdams in The Notebook (2004), Mandy Moore in A Walk to Remember (2002), and Robin Wright in Message in a Bottle (1999). Seyfried’s character is no less strong-willed than the otherSparks women, and maybe just even a little more so.
Seyfried’s last box office hit was the fantasy thriller Red Riding Hood (2011), where she played the wide-eyed heroine Valerie who must choose between her village and the lure of the wolf. Having now established herself in both serious and humorous films, and in both movies and television, we are sure to see more of this talented actress on the big screen.
