Angelina Jolie Reveals Directorial Debut Caused “Complete Meltdown”

Theatre signShe may be one of Hollywood’s most famous A-listers, and one half of one of its best-known power couples, but it seems that Angelina Jolie is far from immune to the pressures that are an inevitable part of directing any film.

She has revealed that being at the helm of In the Land of Blood and Honey left her sobbing.

“I had a complete breakdown and Brad found me crying,” admitted the Tomb Raider star in a live video web chat with a magazine. “I suddenly felt the responsibility and felt very small. I wondered what I had done, and why I ever thought I could take this on. It was a complete meltdown.”

While still adjusting to life behind the camera rather than in front of it, it seems Jolie still struggles in some ways to think of herself as a director, and claims that she ended up in that role “by default,” stating, “I just wanted to tell this story.”

Jolie has also spoken about her family of six children with Brad Pitt, stressing that she hopes to instill “passion and respect” in them.

In the Land of Blood and Honey is a love story against the backdrop of the war in Bosnia.

Set in Sarajevo before the Bosnian War, it centers on Danijel, played by Goran Kostic, a soldier fighting for the Bosnian Serbs. He re-encounters Ajla, a woman with whom he was involved before the war, and who is now a captive in the camp he oversees. Their previously promising liaison has been changed forever by the conflict.

Jolie’s directorial debut had a limited release in the US right before Christmas, and it was nominated for a Golden Globe award.
